OUTSIDE

Unfortunatly keeping the bike on the street or in the front garden is the least secure place. But don't despair there are still things you can do to keep your pride and joy in it's rightful place.

As usual discretion is your first weapon. Keep your bike as out of sight as possible. An old tarpaulin is the best as it can hide the general shape of your bike so no-one can tell whether it's a Fireblade or a FS1E. Fitted covers are fine but keep them underneath the tarpaulin. Most of all you should make sure whatever cover you use you cover the whole of the bike right down to the wheels. A big fat tyre means a big expensive motorcycle so keep it covered.

Park your bike under a street light or have a low wattage light fitted to the house to keep your bike illuminated. Motion detectors are fine but the constant on off can get annoying. Thieves like the dark but too much light will give them an easier time as there are dark shadows in which they can lurk.

If your bike is kept on the road then the option of a ground anchor is pretty much out of the question. You could chain the bike to a lamppost or a set of railings. But if there is nowhere to chain it to make sure that you chain the bike in such a way that the thief will have to stand in the middle of the road or somewhere awkward.Try putting a small padlock through the chain links so that the chain is forced of the sprocket should someone manage to get away with the bike. Fit a cheap alarm or tape the horn button so when someone tries to hotwire the bike it sounds.

If you park in the front garden then a ground anchor is on the cards. If you have a concrete path then use the same method for fittng as you would in a garage but if you are on grass then dig the biggest hole you can and fil it with cement. What you are doing essentially is creating a ball and chain for the bike so the bigger the better.
